Why Žnjan Instead of Bačvice?

Most cruise passengers heading to the beach walk to Bačvice — it’s close to the port (15 minutes on foot). But Bačvice is small, gets crowded fast, and has limited facilities.

Žnjan Beach is worth the extra 10-minute bus ride:

Getting from the Cruise Port to Žnjan

Split’s cruise ships dock at the Port of Split (Gat Sv. Duje or the outer breakwater berths), right next to the Old Town. The port is less than 1 km from Diocletian’s Palace.

By Bus (Best Value — €1.50)

Bus line 15 runs directly from the ferry/cruise port area to Žnjan.

  • Stop: “Trajektna Luka” (ferry port) — right near where you disembark
  • Price: ~€1.50 (buy from the driver or via the Promet app)
  • Journey time: 20–25 minutes
  • Frequency: Every 20–30 minutes
  • Get off at: “Žnjan” stop — 5-minute walk to the beach

Bus line 8 also serves Žnjan from the city centre.

By Taxi or Uber (Fastest — €9–12)

  • Price: €9–12 from the port to Žnjan Beach
  • Time: 6–10 minutes
  • Tip: Uber and Bolt are both available in Split and typically cheaper than port taxis

On Foot (Scenic — 45–55 min)

Walk the coastal promenade: Port → Riva → Bačvice → Firule → Trstenik → Žnjan. It’s flat, scenic, and passes several smaller beaches. But for time-limited cruise passengers, the bus is smarter.

How Much Time Do You Have?

Most cruise ships in Split dock for 8–11 hours, typically arriving at 07:00–09:00 and departing at 16:00–20:00.

What to Bring from the Ship

You don’t need to pack much — Žnjan has everything:

  • Swimsuit and towel (some ships lend beach towels — check)
  • Sunscreen (essential June–September)
  • Cash and card — Croatia uses the Euro since 2023. Cards accepted at all restaurants
  • Phone with Uber/Bolt — for a quick return to the port
  • Water shoes — the beach is pebble, not sand (optional but helpful)

You don’t need:

  • Food — 7 restaurants on the promenade (from €8 pizza to €25 seafood)
  • Snorkel gear — available for rent (€5–10)
  • Sunbed — available at beach clubs (€15–50 depending on venue)

What Žnjan Offers Cruise Passengers

Žnjan was completely rebuilt in 2025 with €45.5 million in investment. Everything is new:

  • 2+ km of beach — Split’s largest
  • 7 pavilion restaurants and beach clubs — from budget-friendly GAL Split to luxury Taboo Beach Club
  • Free showers along the beach
  • Palm-lined promenade — perfect for walking
  • Amphitheatre with a steel dome for events
  • Sports zone — beach volleyball, cycling path
  • Kids area with playground (600 m²) and shallow water

Money-Saving Tips for Cruise Passengers

  1. Skip the ship’s shore excursion — a €1.50 bus ticket gets you to a world-class beach. No need to pay €50+ for an organized tour
  2. Eat at GAL Split — the most affordable option on the promenade ($$, breakfast from €5, pizza from €8)
  3. Bring your own towel — lie on the pebbles for free instead of renting a sunbed
  4. Take the bus, not a taxi — bus 15 runs directly from the port for €1.50
  5. Don’t exchange money — Croatia uses the Euro. Pay by card everywhere

Important: Don’t Miss Your Ship

Return to the port at least 30–60 minutes before departure time. The ship will not wait for passengers on self-organized excursions.

  • Know your ship’s exact departure time (check the daily programme)
  • Set a phone alarm for your return time
  • Have Uber/Bolt ready as backup — a taxi takes only 10 minutes if you’re running late
  • Bus 15 runs every 20–30 minutes — don’t rely on catching the very last possible bus
