Why Žnjan Is Split’s Best Family Beach
After the €45.77M renovation, Žnjan was designed with families in mind. Unlike Bačvice (sandy but tiny and chaotic) or Kasjuni (beautiful but no kids’ facilities), Žnjan offers the complete package: dedicated kids’ zones, lifeguards, playgrounds, family restaurants, accessible paths for strollers, and 2+ km of space so you never feel cramped.
The Kids’ Zone
The dedicated kids’ area at Žnjan features:
- Shallow, calm water with a gentle pebble entry — ideal for toddlers and young swimmers
- Lifeguards on duty throughout the summer season (June–September)
- Modern playground with age-appropriate equipment
- Bouncy castles and trampolines (seasonal, typically July–August)
- Flat, paved paths connecting to the rest of the beach
The kids’ zone is located on the western section of the beach. Look for the playground structures — they’re visible from the promenade.
Age-Specific Recommendations
Babies & Toddlers (0–3)
- Best area: Kids’ zone — shallowest water, closest to facilities
- Bring: UV sun tent or pop-up shade, water shoes (pebbles are uncomfortable for tiny feet), swim nappies, sun hat
- Stroller access: The promenade is fully paved and flat — perfect for pushchairs. Park the stroller on the promenade and carry the little one to your beach spot
- Tip: Arrive early (before 10am) to claim a shaded spot near the trees
Young Children (4–8)
- Best area: Kids’ zone and main beach
- Activities: Playground, bouncy castle, paddling, building pebble towers
- Safety: Always supervise near the water. Some areas get deep quickly outside the kids’ zone
- Tip: The beach clubs have children’s menus, so you don’t need to pack a full lunch
Older Kids & Tweens (9–12)
- Best area: Main beach and sports zone
- Activities: Beach volleyball, swimming, snorkeling at the eastern rocky end, cycling the promenade
- Tip: Rent a SUP board or kayak — kids this age love the independence of paddling along the coast (with adult supervision from shore)
Teenagers (13+)
- Best area: Sports zone, beach clubs, promenade
- Activities: Volleyball, SUP, kayaking, cycling, hanging out at beach bars (non-alcoholic drinks), promenade walking
- Tip: Give them some independence to explore the promenade while you relax at a beach club. The area is safe and self-contained.
Safety Essentials
- Water shoes are a must — The pebble beach is uncomfortable barefoot, and there are occasional sea urchins on rocks
- Sun protection — Apply reef-safe sunscreen every 2 hours. The Adriatic sun is intense, especially noon to 3pm
- Hydration — Bring plenty of water. Refill at the restaurants along the promenade
- Lifeguards — On duty June–September at the main beach and kids’ zone. Outside these months, there are no lifeguards
- Depth awareness — The water gets deep more quickly than at sandy beaches. Keep non-swimmers in the kids’ zone
What to Pack
| Essential | Why |
|---|---|

| Pop-up shade tent | Especially for babies/toddlers |
| Snacks and water | Beach club prices are €€-€€€ |
| Towels | Not provided on the public beach |
| Swim nappies | For babies and toddlers |
| Small first aid kit | Plasters for minor scrapes |
Best Times for Families
- Weekday mornings (9–11am): Quietest, easiest parking, best spot selection
- June & September: Warm enough for swimming (21–25°C water) with far fewer crowds than July/August
- Late afternoon (4–6pm): Crowds thin out, temperatures cool, and sunset over the promenade is beautiful
Avoid: Saturday/Sunday 11am–3pm in July/August — peak crowds, peak heat, peak parking stress.
Eating with Kids
All the pavilion restaurants along the promenade are family-friendly. Best options:
- Central Beach — Casual all-day dining, kid-friendly menu, right on the beachfront
- GAL Split — Mediterranean fare, relaxed atmosphere, good for families
- Casa Sol — Mediterranean with Italian influences, slightly more upscale but welcomes families
Budget tip: Bring sandwiches, fruit, and water from a supermarket in Split. You’ll save significantly compared to beach restaurant prices.
Stroller & Accessibility
- The 2 km promenade is fully paved, flat, and wide — strollers roll easily
- Ramps connect the promenade to the beach level
- Accessible toilets are available
- On the beach itself, wheels don’t work well on pebbles — plan to carry kids from the promenade to your spot
- Baby changing — available in the accessible toilet facilities
The Verdict
Žnjan is hands-down the best beach in Split for families. No other beach in the city matches its combination of dedicated kids’ facilities, lifeguards, restaurants, parking, and space. Come early, bring water shoes, and you’ll have a fantastic family beach day.
