Overview: Active Žnjan
Žnjan Beach isn’t just for sunbathing. The €45.77M transformation created a 1,200 m² sports zone with dedicated courts, rental stations, and water access points designed for active visitors. Whether you want to paddle across the Adriatic or spike a volleyball, here’s everything you need to know.
| Activity | Price | Difficulty | Where |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stand-Up Paddleboarding | €15–30/hour | Easy | Sports zone, main beach |
| Kayaking | €20–40/hour | Moderate | Sports zone |
| Beach Volleyball | Free / €10 court rental | Moderate | Sports zone |
| Jet Ski | €50–80/30 min | Easy (guided) | Eastern beach area |
| Pedal Boats | €15–25/hour | Easy | Main beach |
| Swimming | Free | Any | All zones |
Stand-Up Paddleboarding (SUP)
SUP is the most popular water sport at Žnjan. The calm, clear Adriatic water — often with visibility exceeding 10 metres — makes it ideal for beginners and experienced paddlers alike.
What to Expect
- Rental price: €15–30/hour depending on board type and rental point
- Lesson + rental: €30–50 for a 1-hour beginner lesson with board
- Duration: Most people rent for 1–2 hours
- Available: May through October (best conditions June–September)
Best Spots for SUP
- Sports zone — The main rental point with the widest board selection. Flat launch area into calm water.
- Main beach — Several rental stands along the promenade. More crowded but convenient if you’re already set up here.
- Early morning (before 10am) offers the calmest water — glassy conditions are common.
Tips for Beginners
- Start on your knees — Get comfortable balancing before standing up
- Look at the horizon — Not your feet. This helps balance enormously
- Stay close to shore at first — The wind can pick up and push you out faster than you’d expect
- Wear a leash — All rentals should include one. It keeps the board from drifting away if you fall
- Avoid the swimming zones — Paddle away from swimmers, especially families with children
Kayaking
Kayaking from Žnjan lets you explore Split’s coastline from the water — rocky coves, sea caves, and views of the Marjan hill that you can’t see from the beach.
Rental Options
- Single kayak: €20–30/hour
- Tandem kayak: €30–40/hour
- Guided coastal tour: €40–60/person (2–3 hours, includes equipment)
- Available at: Sports zone rental stations
Where to Paddle
- East along the coast — Rocky shoreline with small coves and clear water. Less boat traffic.
- West toward Trstenik — Follow the coastline past several neighbourhood beaches toward the city. More scenic, more boats.
- Guided tours head to nearby sea caves and hidden beaches that are inaccessible by foot.
Kayaking Tips
- Morning is best — Calmer water, less wind, fewer boats
- Bring water and sunscreen — You’re more exposed on the water than on the beach
- Watch for boat traffic — Stay close to shore and be visible
- Wear water shoes — You’ll need to wade in and out
Beach Volleyball
The sports zone has dedicated beach volleyball courts — proper sand courts with nets and marked boundaries, not improvised setups.
How It Works
- Pick-up games: Show up and join. Locals play most evenings from 5–7pm. Just ask — they’re welcoming.
- Court rental: €10/hour if you want a private court for your group
- Equipment: Balls are available at the rental station (€5 deposit)
- Location: Sports zone, clearly signposted from the promenade
Best Times to Play
- Late afternoon (5–7pm) — The heat fades, locals come out, and you’ll find games to join
- Morning (8–10am) — Courts are empty if you want them to yourself
- Avoid midday — The sand gets scorching in summer
Pedal Boats & Fun Rides
For a more relaxed water experience, pedal boats and similar rentals are available along the main beach.
- Pedal boats: €15–25/hour (2–4 person capacity)
- Best for: Families, couples, casual fun
- No experience needed — Just pedal and steer
Jet Ski
Jet ski rentals operate from the eastern end of the beach, away from the main swimming zones.
- Price: €50–80 for 30 minutes
- Guided rides available — An instructor accompanies you if you’ve never ridden before
- Minimum age: Typically 16+ (with adult supervision) or 18+ solo
- ID required for rental
Note: Jet ski operators change seasonally. Ask at the beach information point for current providers.
Skate Park
Not on the water, but worth mentioning — the 1,200 m² skate park is one of the largest in Dalmatia. Located in the sports zone with ramps, rails, and a bowl section.
- Free to use — Bring your own board/blades/scooter
- Best times: Early morning or late afternoon (cooler, less crowded)
- Surface: Smooth concrete
- Helmets recommended but not enforced
Coming Soon
Žnjan’s transformation is still expanding. Three major additions are in the tender process:
Aquapark
A water park complex is planned for the Žnjan area. Tenders have been issued — once an operator is selected, expect water slides, splash pads, and family-oriented water attractions. This will be Split’s first beachfront aquapark.
Diving Club
A dedicated dive centre at Žnjan is in the works. This will offer PADI courses, equipment rental, and guided dives from the beach — no need to travel to the harbour.
Windsurfing Club
A windsurfing and possibly kitesurfing operation is planned. The eastern end of Žnjan catches consistent afternoon winds, making it suitable for wind sports.
We’ll update this article as these facilities open.
Practical Tips
- Book nothing in advance for casual activities — SUP, kayak, and pedal boat rentals are walk-up. Just show up.
- Guided tours are worth booking ahead in July–August — they fill up
- Bring water shoes — Essential for water entry and rocky areas
- Cash is useful — Some rental stands prefer cash, though beach clubs take cards
- Wind check: If the bura (north wind) is blowing, water sports may be suspended. Ask at rental points.
- Combine activities — Paddle in the morning, volleyball in the afternoon, sunset at a beach club. Žnjan makes it easy to fill a full active day.
