Overview: Active Žnjan
Žnjan Beach isn’t just for sunbathing. The €45.77M transformation created a 1,200 m² sports zone and a long public shoreline designed for active visitors. The clearest current rule is simple: all public sports activities are free, there is no current reservation system, and the beach sports areas are open on a first-come, first-served basis.
| Activity | Cost | Difficulty | Where |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stand-Up Paddleboarding | Free | Easy | Sports zone, main beach |
| Kayaking | Free | Moderate | Sports zone, main beach |
| Beach Volleyball | Free | Moderate | Sports zone |
| Swimming | Free | Any | All zones |
| Snorkeling | Free | Easy | Sports zone edges, rocky sections |
| Skate Park | Free | Mixed | Sports zone |
Stand-Up Paddleboarding (SUP)
SUP is one of the easiest water activities to enjoy at Žnjan. The calm, clear Adriatic water — often with visibility exceeding 10 metres — makes it ideal for beginners and experienced paddlers alike.
What to Expect
- Access: Free public water access if you bring your own board
- Reservation system: None at the moment
- How it works: Launch areas are shared and first-come, first-served
- Best season: May through October (best conditions June–September)
Best Spots for SUP
- Sports zone — A practical launch point into calmer water.
- Main beach — Convenient if you’re already set up nearby, but usually busier.
- Early morning (before 10am) offers the calmest water — glassy conditions are common.
Tips for Beginners
- Start on your knees — Get comfortable balancing before standing up
- Look at the horizon — Not your feet. This helps balance enormously
- Stay close to shore at first — The wind can pick up and push you out faster than you’d expect
- Wear a leash if you have one — it keeps the board from drifting away if you fall
- Avoid the swimming zones — Paddle away from swimmers, especially families with children
Kayaking
Kayaking from Žnjan lets you explore Split’s coastline from the water — rocky coves, sea caves, and views of the Marjan hill that you can’t see from the beach.
What to Expect
- Access: Free public shoreline access if you bring your own kayak
- Reservation system: None at the moment
- How it works: Launch space is shared and first-come, first-served
- Best time: Morning usually means calmer water and fewer boats
Where to Paddle
- East along the coast — Rocky shoreline with small coves and clear water. Less boat traffic.
- West toward Trstenik — Follow the coastline past several neighbourhood beaches toward the city. More scenic, more boats.
- Stay near the coast if you’re not experienced — conditions can change quickly.
Kayaking Tips
- Morning is best — Calmer water, less wind, fewer boats
- Bring water and sunscreen — You’re more exposed on the water than on the beach
- Watch for boat traffic — Stay close to shore and be visible
- Wear water shoes — You’ll need to wade in and out
Beach Volleyball
The sports zone has dedicated beach volleyball courts — proper sand courts with nets and marked boundaries, not improvised setups.
How It Works
- Pick-up games: Show up and join. Locals play most evenings from 5–7pm. Just ask — they’re welcoming.
- Public access: The courts are free to use and there is currently no reservation system
- How it works: The courts are open to the public on a first-come, first-served basis
- Equipment: Bring your own ball if you can, or ask around on site
- Location: Sports zone, clearly signposted from the promenade
Best Times to Play
- Late afternoon (5–7pm) — The heat fades, locals come out, and you’ll find games to join
- Morning (8–10am) — Courts are empty if you want them to yourself
- Avoid midday — The sand gets scorching in summer
Swimming & Easy Water Access
You do not need to book or pay to enjoy the sea at Žnjan. Swimming remains the simplest and most reliable activity on the beach.
- Free public access across the beach zones
- Best for: Families, casual visitors, and anyone who wants a low-friction beach day
- No reservation system — just use the beach respectfully and share space with others
Skate Park
Not on the water, but worth mentioning — the 1,200 m² skate park is one of the largest in Dalmatia. Located in the sports zone with ramps, rails, and a bowl section.
- Free to use — Bring your own board/blades/scooter
- Best times: Early morning or late afternoon (cooler, less crowded)
- Surface: Smooth concrete
- Helmets recommended but not enforced
Coming Soon
Žnjan’s transformation is still expanding. Three major additions are in the tender process:
Aquapark
A water park complex is planned for the Žnjan area. Tenders have been issued — once an operator is selected, expect water slides, splash pads, and family-oriented water attractions. This will be Split’s first beachfront aquapark.
Diving Club
A dedicated dive centre at Žnjan is in the works. This would add courses and guided dives from the beach — no need to travel to the harbour.
Windsurfing Club
A windsurfing and possibly kitesurfing operation is planned. The eastern end of Žnjan catches consistent afternoon winds, making it suitable for wind sports.
We’ll update this article as these facilities open.
Practical Tips
- There is no current reservation system for the public sports areas — just arrive and use shared spaces fairly.
- Bring your own equipment if you want to paddle, skate, or play with your own ball or board.
- Bring water shoes — Essential for water entry and rocky areas.
- Arrive early if you want calmer water or quieter courts.
- Wind check: If the bura (north wind) is blowing, paddling conditions can worsen quickly.
- Combine activities — Swim in the morning, volleyball later in the day, and sunset on the promenade.
